SMZ TMP Tablets

Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole Tables or  SMZ TMP for dogs, cats, and horses is a combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It is an antibiotic-sulfa combination used to treat a wide range of infections in horses, dogs, cats, and other species of animals. SMZ TMP tablets may be used to treat bacterial and protozoal infections. The antibiotic may also be used in horses where control of bacterial infections is required during treatment of acute strangles, respiratory tract infections, acute urogenital infections, wound infections, and abscesses. SMZ TMP is an multi-species antibiotic for treatment of bacterial and protozoal infections.

Alone, sulfonamides are bacteriostatic agents and trimethoprim is bactericidal, but when used in combination, the potentiated sulfas are bactericidal. SMZ with TMP has fairly broad spectrum of activity, such as gram-positive bacteria including most streptococci, many strains of staphylococcus, and Nocardia. Many gram-negative organisms of the family Enterobacteriaceae are susceptible to the potentiated sulfas. Some protozoa (Pneumocystis carinii, Coccidia, and Toxoplasma) are also inhibited by the combination.

Supplied individually and as either a bottle containing 100 or 500 tablets in concentration of either 480 mg or 960 mg.
